June 30. Out of Barlett cove with tide at 8:30 am. Did an hour of sailing and about 7 of motoring and stopped to do some close up whale watching after some swimming moose watching. This moose was headed across Icy Strait. We diverted it back to shore. Into Hoonah fuel for 30 gallons. No contact with Harbor Master. Did a tenuous tie up to a float under construction. On the next morning (Monday) the harbormaster staff came a knocking. They informed us that we couldn’t tie up to the “under construction” warf that we had tied up to for the night. We were assigned another spot that had an electrical hook up which we easily relocated to that morning. The afternoon before we had discovered a small, small grocery store just off the dock and several commercial restaurants/tourist stores that were not open and all had; no or cruise ship dependent hours of operation? After a picking up a few substandard vegies and other supplies we found the liquor store. Also weird hours. It was however; next to a dock that had a hand scrawled sign; “crab for sale – $15. Done; dinner, crab and white wine and vegies and rice. July 1 : after moving the boat, we went to a local restaurant for a nice morning coffee and chai. We figured we would come back here for dinner but as it later turned out; they had a propane issue with their stoves and ovens and closed down for the rest of the day, at least. The town of Hoonah was originally used as a logging and mostly fishing/canning city. As those industries gradually faded the city ( in about 2004) decided to court the cruise ship industry. They installed two cruise ship docks just north of town complete with nearby restaurants, retail stores, historical interests and art works, plus a chair lift and zip line that goes to the top of a nearby mountain. We toyed with the idea of doing the zip line but the weather was cloudy and drizzly so we passed. We did find a well stocked grocery store, a little further into town and did a good shop because our travel agenda did not look like we were going to be near a decent grocery or liquor store for the next week or longer. The local homes and businesses were starting to decorate for their 4th of July festivities. Andy decided to do his Canada Day acknowledgement photos and dragged Pi along with him. It was a drizzly night and all the local restaurants ( all 3 of them) were closed by 5 pm?! Back to the crab boat, with us. Poor us?
