Day 85

July 29. Out Codville Lagoon about 9am in showers on our way on mostly flat seas to Pruth Bay and Hakai Provincial Marine Park. We stopped to watch a whale do some whale antics (tail and fin slapping) Humpy. 85 days into this adventure and have not even see one orca? We saw lots of salmon jumping, so; I tossed a line in and trolled for about a half hour at about 3mph. No takers. We turned the motor off in Hakai Passage to have lunch. Note: soup in a full bowl not too smart in the open ocean swells. Once anchored in serene and protected Pruth Bay we with Pi, dingyed a short distance to the fancy dock of the Hakai Institute, a well funded research foundation. Once through the buildings, gardens and other miscellaneous structures of the Institute there was a 1 or 2 kilometer flat trail to the a large west facing sandy beach. It reminded me of Long Beach near Tofino. They called this beach; West Beach. Along this stretch of Calvert Island there is 7 plus beaches all connected by partially boardwalked trails. Compliments of the Institute and B.C. Parks. There was also a really nice “look out” atop one of the mountains along one of the trails. We hiked up and the view was spectacular. Too bad it wasn’t ” a blue sky day”. We only saw one other couple, walking out, in the 3 or 4 hours we explored. Pi was boatbound too long, so; we let her off leash once we got to the beach, until we got back to the dock. She went wild. Running…..running…..running every where….all the time. Somehow; during this cavorting, in the forest, she somehow got her harness caught on something and lost it. We didn’t here any yelping and she was unphased. Once we got on the trails between beaches and to the lookout there was plenty of standing and running water for her to drink. I was able to keep my running shoes dry, with a little dancing. This whole Calvert Island and Hakai Passage was probably my favourite place, so far on this trip. I could have easily spent a whole summer exploring, here. Laurence; not so much. The weather and the forecast was not great so we decided to move on, south, the next day.
