Andy: A 71-year old retired Vancouver City firefighter. Born in Victoria B.C. He took early retirement at age 50, in 2002, and moved to his off-grid, water-access only, recreational property in Clayoquot Sound, Vancouver Island, acting as resident caretaker for his recreational community. He married Laurence in 2005 (mostly to legalize her residence in Canada, though there were admittedly some “fringe benefits”). They bought a small condo in downtown Vancouver which allows Laurence to alternate between the big city and the rainforest. As to Andy, his old, well-used body needs some new knees, and a new shoulder, good general pain management and apparently a better sense of humour. Assuming intact survival of this trip, he plans to return to Clayoquot and to tackle other less physically challenging items on his bucket list as well as getting back in the queue for total knee replacements and to get treatment for a bum shoulder.
Laurence: Born in France, she moved from Paris, where she was modeling, to Mexico City in her early 20s where she lived for 18 years. working in the entertainment business. She escaped to Vancouver in 2003 getting her Canadian citizenship in 2005 (after trapping a nice, unsuspecting Canadian in her evil clutches), to go with her Mexican and French ones. She is fluent in
English, French and Spanish. She started her own freelance translation business which she still works at, whilst relaunching her modeling career as a ‘classic’ model (a euphemism for ‘old’). So yes, you could say she’s an ‘old dog’ -although she is not as adaptable as Pi- but has agreed, with trepidation, to attempt Andy’s Alaskan voyage with the caveat: she may return to Vancouver whenever she can and wants to. Having a decent internet connection is a must for her to work and connect. So far, about 2 weeks into the trip; the Starlink internet connection seems to be working satisfactorily.
