May 15. Twaz into a not very friendly northwesterly up Johnston Straight, for 4 hours to a marina at Kelsey Cove at Sayward. The marina was a small cheap ( 95 cents a foot) government wharf with electricity, water and nice close by showers and washrooms. It was quite bumpy all the time, from the waves and tides in the Straight. The small village of Sayward was about a 30 minute walk from the marina. Sayward is an active logging village of approximately 500 residents, with only several campsites being the other “industry” here. There were no services ( restaurants, fuel or stores in Sayward). It was, apparently a 10 kilometer trip to the junction with the main Island highway to get to a small general store and gas station. We assume that that and an approximate 1 hour drive to Campbell river is where the Sayward residents shop. There was a nice non staffed information centre on the Kelsey Bay dock.
