Day 116

August 30. Up early (6:30am) to row Pi into the uncrowded Spit beach. Did not dare let her off leash as she would surely run and run and run and we did want to continue our journey this morning. It was another sunny warm and mostly windless day. I forgot to top up the main fuel tank before we left so after about an hour of motoring we ran out of fuel. No problem though. We were nicely off any rocks or in any B.C. ferry’s path. I just drained the auxiliary fuel tank into the main fuel tank for about 10 minutes and the engine started up right away and we were on our way again. Around lunch time we found ourselves passing by a nice white sandy beach on Salt Spring Island, called Walker Hook. We anchored just off with a few other boats. I made a large Greek salad and quesadillas and we had lunch on the boat in the sun. After lunch we rowed into the beach for a walk and swim. We spent a very pleasant 3 hours hanging out there. After that; it was about a 2 hour motor into another popular anchorage on Thetis Island, called; Clam Bay. This was to be our jumping off point to head across Georgia Straight into Vancouver. We anchored and just enjoyed a sunny HH and dinner of curried vegies and thawed out prawns. To get out of this portion of thee Gulf Islands that was closest to Vancouver we had to go through a narrow passage called Poirier Pass. Lots of current, whirlpools and tidal action here. Best to go through at or near slack tide in our boat. That was going to be 9am the next morning and the marine forecast called for some favourable winds for the crossing.

Clam Bay anchorage.
