Day 72 & 73

July16 and 17. We left Hassler Harbor in showers and bita headwind at 7:45 aiming for the last harbour before our Alaska exit. Had a bit of a scare on the way. The engine quit. Not good! We were far enough offshore not to be in immediate danger. But……not good! Turned out; that I made a bit of a miscalculation of our fuel usage. Missed a 7 hour motoring day in my calculations. Once I opened the 2nd larger fuel tank and drained it into the main tank……..we were on our way again. I was planning to do that in our next destination harbor; Foggy Cove. We weaved our way into a small scenic cove called Foggy Bay Inside Cove and securely anchored at about 1pm. This was going to be our last Alaska anchorage and a suggested anchorage while waiting for the right sea conditions to make the crossing to Prince Rupert across a Dixon Straight, a sometimes dangerous crossing of about 30 miles. We had a nice hot lunch and the weather impoved to be a nice mix of sun and cloud. I rowed Pi into a nearby islet for her “walk”. I made the mistake of letting her be off leash and she ran like she did at our last stop at Hassler Harbor. She did not return when repeatedly called. I rowed back to the boat to tell Laurence that we were now a crew of 2. Laurence was not impressed. But……whatdayado? After about a half hour Pi returned to where we had previously landed. I tried to call her from the boat; to swim home. Laurence was not impressed. I rowed in to get a tired wet Pi and taxi her home. WetDogitty on board again. We went to bed a bit earlier than usual; about 10pm because I wanted to get an early start the next day. At 4:30am the next day I awoke and checked the marine weather forecasts and conditions. They offered up to 30 knot headwinds from the southeast later in the day and the fog was now thick in Foggy Cove. Whoudathunk? Back to bed with me. Try another day. July 17 was a rainy day. I read a my radar and auto helm manuals……..cause; it would be good if they both worked properly and I knew how to work them properly. Laurence did her usual translation quota and we basically hunkered down in a suitable warm and comfortable boat for the day…….stalling on a Pi walk. The rain did not let up so; eventually I rowed Pi in for a leashed access to the shore.
