Aug.10. Outa Walters Cove at 8 am and motor into a slight southeast wind into the north end of Nootka Island, at 1pm, where we stopped for lunch and decided whether to continue on to Friendly Cove at the south end of Nootka Island. We choose a fairly bumpy small cove to anchor for lunch. After lunch we decided that conditions and crew temperament allowed a continuation further south, to Friendly Cove. I did a bit of trolling on our way out of our “lunch cove”, to no avail. Because of the reefs off the coast of Nootka Island, we choose to keep a wide distance from the Island, not confident enough to make an unwise dash to go around Estavan Point. The fog closed in after a couple of hours and did not substantially abate until we motored into Friendly Cove. It is a good anchorage, basically in the shadow of a large lighthouse and associated structures. No foghorn, thankfully. The mosquitos did find us and the generator from the small native habitation were somewhat irritating. It was a long 10 hour motoring day and we slept soon after arrival. The marine and weather forecasts were not great but we thought we might be able to attempt Estavan Point the next day.
